Reasons to make an appointment
Patients can be referred to the Kidney Genetics Clinic when the person’s presentation or family history is suggestive of a genetic cause of kidney disease. Features that suggest an underlying genetic condition include multiple affected family members, kidney disease at a young age, or multiple organ system involvement or features other than just kidney disease. An example of the conditions evaluated in the Kidney Genetic Clinic include:
- Alport Syndrome
- Tubulointerstitial Nephropathy
- Cystic Kidney Disease, including Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
- Nephrotic Syndrome
- Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
- Glomerulonephritis
- Electrolyte disorders (Gitlelman’s and Bartter’s Syndrome)
- Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Cause
Benefits of Genetic Testing
Identifying a genetic cause for kidney disease has direct and substantial benefits for patients. A recent study at Columbia University found that between 1 and 6 to 1 in 10 people with chronic kidney disease will have a genetic diagnosis . In addition to identifying the underlying cause for developing kidney disease, genetic testing can also:
- Provide prognostic information and insight
- Screen for extra-renal features beyond kidney disease
- Initiate specific and targeted therapies, or discontinue certain medications
- Identify at-risk family members
- Assist in transplant selection
