All of Us Research Program
Columbia leads NYC Precision Medicine effort for National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program
The All of Us Research Program is a momentous effort to advance individualized prevention, treatment, and care for people of all backgrounds. A consortium led by Columbia University Irving Medical Center and joined by Weill Cornell Medicine, NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, and NewYork-Presbyterian is spearheading enrollment in New York City. People ages 18 and older, regardless of health status, will be able to enroll. The New York City Consortium is a partner of the All of Us Research Program and is one of several regional networks across the country where individuals can enroll.
The overall aim is to enroll 1 million or more volunteers and oversample communities that have been underrepresented in research to make the program the largest, most diverse resource of its kind.
The NYC Consortium is responsible for enrolling 93,000 participants over a five-year period. The Principal Investigator for the NYC Consortium, Ali Gharavi, MD, is passionate about the research potential with this national project, and has partnered closely with his colleagues across Columbia University to enroll a wide variety of patients. Gharavi and his team have partnered with the Departments of Medicine, Ob/GYN, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation Medicine, ENT, Herbert Irving Cancer Center, and the College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Ali Gharavi:We are very excited to be part of the All of Us study. The goals of the AoU program are perfectly aligned with our mission to bring Precision Medicine to the diverse communities of New York and address health disparities through comprehensive approaches that take into account each individual's unique genetic background and environmental exposures. Enrollment in the AoU will ensure that New York's diverse populations are well represented in this national effort and that the study findings will benefit all New York communities.
Precision medicine is an emerging approach to disease treatment and prevention that considers differences in people's lifestyles, environments. and biological makeup, including genes. By partnering with 1 million diverse people who share information about themselves over many years, the All of Us Research Program will enable researchers to more precisely prevent and treat a variety of health conditions.
