The focus of Dr. Laferrère’s research is the link between obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk, and the effect of weight loss and lifestyle interventions. The overreaching goal of her laboratory for the last 20 years has been to identify the endocrine mechanisms of appetite regulation and improved metabolism in various weight loss models, with a focus on gut peptides, insulin secretion rate, microbiome and metabolomics. Dr. Laferrère is the Columbia site PI of two large longstanding landmark multicenter trials testing the effect of lifestyle intervention on cardiovascular outcomes in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes (The Look AHEAD) or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes (DPPOS).
Currently, her laboratory is studying the effect of sleep, physical activity, diet composition and meal patterns, and intermittent fasting, on interstitial glucose measured by CGMS, and on β-cell function and insulin resistance, in individuals with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
