Dr. Mayer is a board-certified rheumatologist with an interest in Integrative Health. She sees a wide array of rheumatologic conditions. Over the years, she has become increasingly aware of the limitations of treating the pathophysiology of disease without addressing the patient’s overall wellbeing. In her experience, paying attention to a patient’s sleep habits, nutrition, and physical activity is essential to bring him or her back to good health. In addition, there are many ways to address problems such as the anxiety and insomnia often associated with chronic medical conditions that do not involve medications: modalities such meditation, breathing practices, yoga, and t’ai chi can be profoundly beneficial as complements to the pharmacologic treatment of autoimmunity.

Dr. Mayer runs the Integrative Health Collaborative at Columbia University Medical Center. The Collaborative aims to bring together practitioners in different specialties and different schools in the Medical Center to facilitate cooperation in patient care, education, and research. She is also the director of the Integrative Health elective for medical students.
